“JAP” Stereotype Condemned

Nearly 1,000 members of the Reform movement’s National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods unanimously condemned the “growing use of negative stereotyping and prejudice that demeans Jewish women.” The resolution was passed at the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC) convention held in Chicago late last year.

The resolution urged its member sisterhoods to discontinue the sale of “JAP” items in their gift shops, to educate members of their communities about the dangers of the “JAP” stereotype, and to work to raise the consciousness of their congregations and communities to the subtleties of discrimination in our lives.
