Israeli Report Exposes Foreign Ministry Discrimination Against Woman

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Committee on the Status of Women has called Israel’s Foreign Ministry the second worst ministry in its employment of women. (The worst in terms of the percentage of women in upper level positions was the Ministry for Religious Affairs; the best was the Ministry of Justice.)

At the Foreign Ministry, only 7% of the highest ranking jobs are filled by women. The report also stated that men doing the same work as women are given a different title and higher pay, for example female secretaries and male office managers do the same work for different salaries.

The Committee on the Status of Women noted that this discrimination creates “unnecessary bitterness” and deprives the Foreign Ministry of talent.

The Ministry recently appointed women to the positions of Deputy Head of its African Division and First Secretary to the Israeli Embassy in Ottawa.
