A Safe House in Kenya

The Associated Press reports that Eve Ensler, author of “Vagina Monologues,” has financed a safe house for girls In Kenya. This country is one in which female circumcision, although now illegal, is still widely practiced. At the shelter the girls can seek refuge from forced marriage and female genital cutting, and also learn about the dangers of the latter, which include bleeding to death and contracting HIV from unsanitary instruments. According to The World Health Organization, nearly 137 million women have been subjected to this mutilation.
