Fall 2016: Miriam

a poem by Ruth Lehrer

Miriam

When my aunt
remembers Odessa
she remembers
her mother’s Odessa
fortress city with steps down
to the Black Sea
near the woods
where the Jews would run
from the soldiers
during pogroms
And now I remember
her remembering
her mother’s memory
of Odessa
Black Sea
fortress city
steps down
run
